Lots
of great information about is it ok for dogs to eat grass.
Some dogs eat grass and that can be
puzzling to many owners. There are a variety of reasons why they do it. In the
past, it has been thought it could help them to digest food. Yet there isn’t
really any evidence to substantiate it. For others, it could simply be a habit
that they formed out of boredom. There could be something on the grass that
they enjoy the taste of.
Most experts believe that it is ok
for dogs to eat grass. As long as they are getting the nutrition that they need
from other sources and they have energy it is nothing to worry about. Your dog
may develop a desire to eat grass from the time it is very little. Others
develop the desire out of curiosity as they get older.
One reason that people become
alarmed though if a dog is eating grass is that they may vomit after the do so.
Most vets believe that this has to do with the dog not feeling well or already
having an upset stomach before they are consuming the grass. It isn’t believed
that the act of eating the grass is causing the vomiting so don’t be alarmed.
There can be some problems though
when it comes to dogs eating grass. For example if there is fertilizer on it or
some type of herbicide then your dog may become ill from eating that grass. If
you have a pet that enjoys consuming it, you will need to avoid using such
products on it. If you do need them, you will have to arrange away to keep your
dog away from the grass for several days after you apply them.
Most homeowners take a great deal of
pride in the appearance of their yard. They don’t like the idea of their dog
eating the grass at all. They tend to eat it in one location and to eat it very
far down. This can make your yard look sickly instead of well cared for. If
that is the case you will need to develop a plan of action to change the
behavior of the dog.
Some pet stores even offer pet grass
that you can buy for your dog to consume if you want to offer it to them. This
would mean you don’t have to worry about them destroying your grass in the
yard. At the same time you will also know the grass he or she is eating is free
of chemicals.
If you don’t mind though then just
let your dog do it. They certainly won’t be causing any harm to their body by
doing so as long as harmful chemicals aren’t found on the grass. In time your
dog may outgrow the process or it may decide it wants to do it more. Every dog
seems to have its own preference when it comes to eating grass. As a dog owner
it is up to you how you would like to handle it.
