First of all, Frontline is flammable so it is very important to keep it away from heat elements. Your dog should never be coming close enough to any source of fire for it to be a problem once it is on them. However, just knowing that the chemical makeup of this product is flammable should allow you to see that precautions need to be taken when you use it.
Dogs under 8 weeks of age could become very ill due to the chemicals found in frontline. They aren’t fully developed yet and this can lead to serious bone cartilage deformities for them. Avoid using this product on dogs when it is windy because the product can easily get into their eyes. This can lead to a burning sensation and blurred vision. While the effects won’t be long lasting, they can definitely make your dog uncomfortable for several hours.
One of the chemicals found in Frontline is called Fipronili and it has been known to affect the reproductive system in rats. It has also been found to cause cancer in laboratory rats. However, these amounts of the chemical are much higher than what is used in the Frontline products. Should your dog be given a higher dose than what is right for it though these types of side effects could occur.
There are dogs that have experienced vomiting after being given Frontline. This is due to the fact that they have an allergic reaction to the Fipronili in it. There is less than a 1% chance that your dog will react that way to it. Should your dog start to vomit though after you apply the Frontline you want to consult with your vet right away.
One of the common side effects that dogs have though is an irritation to their skin. When you first start to use such a product for your dog you want to closely examine the skin over the next 48 hours. As long as there aren’t any areas that are red, swollen, or flaking then your dog is doing just fine with the product.
Most experts believe that the use of Frontline monthly to keep ticks and fleas at bay is a good idea. It does contain chemicals that are able to successfully kill those types of pests. You can lower the risk of your dog suffering any side effects by paying close attention to the right dose. Never leave such products out where your dog can swallow them all at once.
