If you know how to train your dog properly, it can be easy and
rewarding. However it can also be very frustrating, if you do not know
how to train your dog. Here are some simple tips for some common
problems.
Toilet Training:
First, you should teach him where he should do his putty, preferably, outside the house in your garden. Once he realizes he should go there, he will give signs to you, and you should be alert for that. He can graze his nose, loiter around the door, prance around the room, make eye contact with your or even bark. Dogs can even be trained to ring a bell when they need to go.
You should also feed your dog at regular times and the food should be picked up right after they finish eating. This also help the toilet times to be regular, and it will be easier for you to manage it.
If the dog makes a mess, dog get him yourself instead of calling him. Sit him down and make him look at the mess he made. Scold or growl or punish him to make him know that you are not happy. Then take him outside, where he needs to do this.
Do not let him see that you are cleaning up the mess. If you do, you will lose your position of authority to him, and he will start seeing you as his maid.
This is very common among people who have serious problems with the dog always making a mess in the house. He must know that you are the boss, not the other way around.
Chewing:
Dogs can chew many household items, like case of eye glasses , shoes and slippers, electric cords of vacuum cleaner or electronic devices, or even the cushion of the couch. It might be very frustrating, and you will have the tendency to take it personally and get very angry.
However, your dog does not do such things with the purpose of getting you mad. Maybe he is just going through a chewing period, then just supplying him with some chewing toys might be enough.
Or maybe, he is frustrated. Maybe you have left him alone too much, and he is bored and depressed.
If you discover he chewed something, make him look at it. Then punish him. Also use some encouragement like, praising him when he chews the toy you bought him.
Digging:
If your dog is digging your back yard a lot, that might be because he is bored or he is not allowed inside the house enough. When dogs are bored and frustrated, they tend to dig more holes. Also some breeds have a natural instinct to dig holes for various reasons. These dogs tend to take more time in training than others, before they learn not to dig.
No matter what the cause, and regardless of breed, all dogs can benefit from more training and more attention. That makes them feel more like they are part of the family.
Jumping on people:
Dogs generally jump on people because they want attention. It is better if you can train your dog to sit, and pet him from this position. If you have a puppy, that is easier to do. If you have an older dog, you can still train the dog by grasping his paws firmly, and then letting go of him, down to the floor, saying no. Then you can tell him to sit, and reward him by petting.
Riding in cars:
Do not let your dog eat or drink at least for 3 hours before your trip. When you are first training your dog to ride in cars, choose shorter, smoother routes. Let him sit on the back seat of the car for a few minutes and adjust to the surroundings before you drive. Gradually take him to longer trips, in time. Praise your dog as he enters your car.
The dog should already be trained to obey the sit and down commands.
Never allow your dog in front seat, as he might jump on the driver and can cause accidents.
