Pet Sitting vs. Kenneling

Many people face this decision at least once while owning a pet, and often don’t know how to make it.  Both options have their pros and cons, it is simply a preference of the owner and what fits the pet’s lifestyle the best.  Below I have described what each service is to give you an easier decision making process.

Pet-Sitting

Pet Sitting

This service has become more and more popular within the past 5 years and is growing rapidly!  Having a pet sitter come into your home multiple times each day or even stay the night can be a great advantage for those pets that become nervous/anxious when in new environments especially without their owners by their sides.

Benefits of Pet Sitting

  1. By using a pet sitter, the pet gets to stay in their home environment without the stress on them or you, when you go away.
  2. Many pet sitters will shape their services to your pets needs whether it be specific times to come by or a certain feeding/bedtime routine.
  3. Most pet sitters will administer medications.
  4. Your house can look lived in by rotating lights on and off, opening and closing curtains, get the mail and take the garbage in and out at no extra charge.

Disadvantages of Pet Sitting

Be advised who you choose to use as not everyone can be;
  1. Trusted with your pet
  2. Trusted to be alone in your house.
  3. Trusted with your home security codes and keys.
If pet sitting is the way you want to go, but don’t know how to find a reputable pet sitter, Google pet sitting in your area and you will find local listings.

Kenneling

Kenneling has been very popular for many years and has been a trusted place to have your pet go when you are away.  It allows you to drop your pet off at the kennel and chose what type of “kennel” you would like them to stay in.

Benefits of Kenneling

  1. Usually you can choose between sizes of runs/suites.  Yes, they have doggie suites!!  Most suites are equipped with a TV, bed, rug, radio/music and a small run outside with a doggie door.
  2. They have different caregivers come in throughout the day to check on your pet and let him out for playtime, sometimes alone or with other dogs depending on their social capabilities.
  3. You can feed what you want

Cons of Kenneling

  1. Certain feeding routines may not be the same as at home because the kennel isn’t ‘open’ 24/7 and there are several pets there everyday, especially during holiday times.
  2. Some pets need the constant action going on as they are so active that seeing a person all the time, even if it is a walk by, is what they need to keep them distracted from doing harm.
  3. Be advised, that some dogs come back hoarse from barking and can act sluggish for a few days after visiting the kennel because of the constant hustle and bustle.
Be sure to view the kennel before boarding and check out their staff as it is never the same person taking care of your pet.  Most vets have dog boarding options in their clinics, but there are also kennels that simply provide that service.
I hope this helps in your search for a reliable pet care service.  Most people go away and who wants the worry while enjoying a vacation?!
