When training your dog, you always need to remember that positive encouragement will always achieve better results than shouting and beating. Use rewards often when he does something right, a bite-sized piece of his favourite food will work well and always show you appreciate him when a pat on the head or a belly rub.
All training has some basic principles that need to be followed. Firstly, get the dog to perform the action that you desire, then at the exact moment he completes the action, give him an instruction for that act, then reward him to show your appreciation.
The following is a set of instructions on how to get train your puppy to sit.
  1. You must educate your dog to connect the instruction that you give him with the act that he is performing. For example, if you are spending time with him and he sits all by himself, say “sit” in a stern voice without shouting.
  2. Take a piece of food and slowly raise it above his head. The lure of the food will cause him to reach up to grab it, hopefully also bringing his hindquarters down to the floor effectively making him sit.
  3. At the exact instant that his behind touches the flood and he is upright, give the “sit” instruction. Over time, he will learn to link the action with the command and you will no longer need to tempt him with food.
  4. Make sure you congratulate him when he has completed the motion; if he senses you are happy with his actions, he will be compelled to repeat them.
  5. In each session you should aim to do repeat these actions three or four times. Any more then this and he might start to get tired or agitated.
Through repetition and persistence, your efforts will not go unrewarded. The end result will be a happy dog and a loving companion who is obedient and wonderful to have around. All it needs is a few minutes training every day and before you know it, your pooch will be the best behaved canine in the neighbourhood!
