Choosing the Right Collar for Your Puppy

There are usually only a few different reasons for wanting a collar for your dog, for teaching and identification reasons, or as a fashion statement. Dog collars are available in many different styles, types and designs and may just save your dog if they unfortunately decide to run away one day.

Right-Collar

The type of collar that you should choose should be dependent on your puppy’s behaviour and level of training. For a well behaved and well-trained pup, a soft collar can be suitable but for a stubborn and disobedient dog, a spiked collar may be the best option. Make sure you talk to a dog trainer to discuss the correct selection for your puppy and get some good advice on which one to pick from the hundreds of different styles available today.

The buckle type is considered to be the most common and regular type of dollar collar available. The collar comes in many types of cloths and your puppy’s name can be stitched or embroidered on top for identification purposes. The buckle collar is made up of a number of spaced holes into which a buckle is attached at the desired size for your dog.

Buckle collars also come in certain “breakaway” styles that break into pieces when they are put under excessive stress. This can help avoid your puppy gasping for breath or strangling themselves in the event that they need to break loose for some reason.

Another type of collar is the prong collar. As the name suggests, it is made up of a number of vertical spikes that are attached to the inside area of the collar. Prong collars are usually meant for stubborn and rebellious dogs who needs to be kept in line whilst on a leash. A sharp tug of the leash will cause the prongs to poke into the dog’s neck, thereby causing them to stop whatever disobedient action they are doing at the time. A “prong” collar does sound a bit cruel to the animal, but they do not cause any harm whatsoever, other than a slight pain for a moment, signalling to the puppy that what they are doing is wrong.

When choosing a collar always speak to other dog owners and trainers about the right choice for your pup. Remember, selecting the right collar is based on your dogs’ level of obedience and his demeanour and also the level of training that he has completed.
