Would you like your dog to act as a pet star in the movies
or on TV? Does your dog has what it takes to be a good dog actor? It can
be both very rewarding and challenging at the same time for both you
and your dog, if you want your dog to act in movies.
Training a dog to act in movies is definitely much harder than just
the basic dog obedience training. Therefore, you should be able and
willing to put in extra time and effort to properly train your dog, if
you are serious about your dog to become a pet star.Your dog should obey your commands, there is no question about that. More than that, he needs to understand and obey your commands, even when there is lots of distraction at the busy movie set environment, and even if he is away from you. Also he needs to understand your hand signals, as good as your voice commands.
Sometimes, dog owners are not allowed to the set. When that is the case, a dog trainer will give your dog the commands. Does your dog follow the commands of strangers? If he has difficulty following other peoples commands, that might be a problem.
Also, you as the dog owner, must have some flexibility with your schedule. Can you be available on short notice? Thats hard for 9-5 day job workers. Its easier if you have your own business, freelance, or work from home so you can set your own hours.
Even the dog breed is important. For example, a German Shepherd will find roles easily, as they are highly trainable and already used as police dogs, rescue dogs, and many other uses. Also, generally one role is filled with several different dogs, because it is too demanding for a single dog to act the role. Therefore, if 3 dogs are selected to play the part, they must look alike each other.
Even if you and your dog qualify at least that far, there is a long way to go for your dog to become the next Lassie. Just like a new actor does not become a Hollywood star overnight, your dog is far from being awarded top pet roles to play when youre just starting out. The question is, where to start, and how much you can make?
Usual payment for new pet actors is in the range of $100-$500 per day. Of course it depends on how talented your dog is. One of the best places to start, is to find a local film school. Contact with recent graduates, or student who will graduate soon. Usually, they make a film before graduating. This is a good opportunity to get your feet wet. You can have your dog act in one of those films, and get paid too.
Once you start your dog to act in his first movie, get out there and make new contacts. Go to movie industry conventions. Get involved in clubs, and associations. Get some exposure and do something everyday to fulfill your dream, even if its a small step.
In the meantime, remember to love your dog above all, and dont let your greed of fame and fortune to ruin your relationship with your dog. A loving dog will be both a better actor and a source of joy in your life, for a long time.
