When you decide that you want to become a dog trainer, youll need some help
getting the information and experience you need. The two basic type of dog
training schools are online web based courses and hands-on courses. If you want
to stay at home and get all the theories and information about dog training, as
well as reduced fees, an online course can be a good start. Youll do your
readings, research and submit assignments and enter online exams to get grades.
There are some very good online programs giving you all the theory and
information you need.
If you have time and access to a hands-on dog training school, you can get live training there. Most of them will set a schedule for you either days, nights, or weekends. The advantage of getting hands on training is that you also get some valuable experience. You know, it different than reading a book and submitting a written exam than actually working with a dog. Generally, a basic dog training course lasts about 4-6 weeks. But if you already know the basics, and you are getting a specialized course, then you can attend 1-2 week courses too.
Becoming a good dog trainer requires lots of experience which may take years. You can gain further experience after training by helping a master trainer as an apprentice. Youll not be earning as much as youd be earning if you worked for yourself, but learning from a master may cut years from your learning curve till you become a master yourself. You can also volunteer for dog shelters, rescue groups, if you cannot find a master.
You can also get certified as a dog trainer from CCPDT. Their entry level certification requires that you have at least 5 years of experience and a minimum number of hours working with dogs, before you can take the test.
